The Art of John Biggers: View from the Upper Room
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (April, 1995)
Average review score:

a beautiful volume on one of this country's finest paintersJohn Biggers came to artistic maturity in an academic setting far from the art centers of New York. He was repulsed by the New York art scene that had so summarily dismissed black art when he had participated in a MOMA black student art exhibit. Perhaps his avoidance of the centers of art commerce were as responsible for the late acceptance of his genius as was the segregationist mindset in the United States during Biggers's early career. As well as producing important paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Biggers is one of this country's most important muralists, creating more than twenty major murals in fifty years. His life has been dramatic in both content and context. Wardlaw draws a clear portrait of African-American life in the black section of a sharply segregated Gastonia, North Carolina, where Biggers grew up in the 1930s, and the rich family and community life of rural black America of the time. The other essays, written by noted scholars, trace the history of Biggers's artistic career through a careful study and analysis of his body of work.

The Biblical Kierkegaard: Reading by the Rule of Faith
Published in Paperback by Mercer University Press (June, 1997)
Average review score:

Excellent linking of trad. Bible reading & modern herm'ntcsPolk accepts the various insights of modern hermeneutics, especially the idea that at the heart of interpretation is the notion of 'imaginative construal' where we construe a text as a particular speech act. He finds this in Stanley Fish, where the reading community makes the meaning, and sees it exemplified in Kierkegaard, who allowed this process to be governed everywhere by the rule of faith. Polk notes that even Fish saw Augustine's rule of faith as a model for how interpretation works. Following K, Polk then provides readings of James and Job to show how it works. Very helpful for providing examples of what happens when hermeneutical insights are pursued to the actual text of scripture.

Blood Tango
Published in Paperback by Avon (January, 1984)

Hotter than Dallas!!!A fiction set in Argentina,a nation caught in a web of terror and war with an aristocratic, wealthy family caught in the middle of a national conflict with brothers turning violently against each other and a breathtakingly beautiful and sensuous women whose love for one brother causes her to deceive and betray another. The book illustrates a privileged family unprotected from the turmoil of war and oppression of their country and divided by their conflicting passions and dangerous loyalties which locks them into a fatal and horrific fight against events and forces heating up beyond their power. This novel would make a strong theme for a movie!!Hotter than "Dallas"!!I think Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz would make excellent candidates for starring roles if the book would ever be put on film.

Displacing Natives
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (June, 1999)
Average review score:

Splendid study, making Hawai'i resonate with wit and concern"Displacing Natives" is a splendid study, making Hawai'i resonate with wit and concern, by tracking how the "rhetoric of demonization" was followed by a "rhetoric of preservation" that, in both historical instances and rhetorical tropes, worked to displace the Hawaiian Natives and their prior mythologies of place and nation. The wry chapter on the Hollywood movies of "safe savagery" makes an important and lasting contribution to the semiotics of imagining Hawai'i. This book would be of value to all students of Hawaiian literature and culture, and to scholars of Pacific native cultural studies as well. When transnational cultural and postcolonial studies turn to work up the Pacific (when the heck would that be?), this fine book will be here waiting, despite the poor marketing tactics or the lack of market flash.

Down in Houston : Bayou City Blues
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (April, 2003)
Average review score:

Excellent history of Houston blues sceneFans of the blues will thoroughly enjoy this outstanding book by Roger Wood and James Fraher, who spent seven years researching and interviewing folks involved with the largely "invisible" blues music scene in Houston and the surrounding area. Fraher's photographs are outstanding, and they help drive the lively text. The authors interviewed musicians, club owners, producers and many others associated with the music scene in Houston's Third Ward and the Fifth Ward. The book moves easily from clubs to ballrooms to barbecue joints, where the music first took root and is still played today. Many legendary blues musicians such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Clifton Chenier, Gatemouth Brown and others of similar rank make appearances in the text. This is a high-quality book from a production standpoint and is an incredible bargain at full price or the Amazon.com sale price.
